Arisaema is a woodland plant more commonly known as “jack in the pulpit” because of the green and purple bloom, or “spadix” (jack), that hides in a green- and purple-striped hooded sheath, or “spathe” (pulpit). The blooms disappear in autumn and are replaced with bright red berries. If you don’t have time to plant the jack in the pulpit blooms immediately, it’s important to store them properly until you can get them in the ground. Although the bulbs can be dug up stored for the winter, it isn’t usually necessary, because jack in the pulpit is hardy enough to withstand sub-zero alpine temperatures. Fill a cardboard container with peat moss, and bury the jack in the pulpit bulbs–not touching–in the peat moss. If you’re storing several jack in the pulpit bulbs, store them in layers of peat moss. Place the cardboard container in a garage, shed or basement where the air will be dry and the temperatures will be about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Check the container often, and mist the contents w
