How do you stop writing Narrative essays in History?
I’m a history teacher. I’ll try to do my best, but without seeing the assignment, it may be difficult… The key to writing a good history paper is to remember a few things. First, as your teacher has suggested, you shouldn’t write in a narrative style. In other words, don’t just tell the facts of what happened, but analyse them. You’re not doing a review of a topic, you are (I’m assuming) being asked to write a logical, argumentative essay on a topic. This requires you to do some of your own thinking. One of the key ways to do this is to analyse what others have said, and then expand on it. For instance, an easy (and often effective) tool is to use a quotation from someone else (giving credit to that person, of course), and then analyse the quote by suggesting what the person is arguing, and then add your own thoughts to it. Second, you must always remember that you’re not telling a story, you’re explaining and analysing history. There is a difference. While history CAN be written lik
