Create a fire pit or make a fire ring with stones. Find a place where exposure to wind or rain will be limited. If you are building a fire in a fireplace, open the chimney flue. Place two medium-sized split logs parallel to each other on the floor of the fireplace or fire pit. The logs should be a few inches apart. Crumple and tightly twist several pieces of newspaper. Fill the space between the logs with the newspaper. Place kindling across the newspaper to bridge the logs. Strike a match and ignite the newspaper.
