How Do You Start A Pilot Light On A Furnace?
Lighting the furnace pilot light is often the last step in servicing the home’s heating system, or the first step in starting the system after a gas service interruption. You can find the pilot light assembly behind an access door at the base of the furnace unit, and can safely ignite the pilot light using the pilot control valve. Open the furnace controls access door, located at the bottom front of the furnace unit. Turn the gas control valve to the off setting and wait three to four minutes to let any escaped gas dissipate. Determine the location of the pilot tube. The pilot tube will be near the furnace burner coil, pointed up at an angle. You may need a flashlight to see the pilot tube’s location. Turn the pilot light control knob to “pilot” and depress the knob. Hold a lit wooden match or fireplace lighter to the tip of the pilot tube to ignite the pilot light.
