Most yarn comes in skeins that are not convenient to knit from, so make it into a yarn ball instead. • Knit a gauge swatch or tension square, especially for items that need to fit correctly. You want your number of stitches per inch or two inch to match the gauge specified in the pattern. • Create a slip knot. This is like tying an overhand knot (a normal knot), but pull the yarn through the knot so it forms a loop. Place the knot onto the needle and pull it tight. • Cast on.
