If you’re an avid gardener–or just want great organic vegetables without going to the farmer’s market–you probably already know you need to compost. Compost is the process in which organic material, usually kitchen scraps, is recycled into nutrient rich soil. Unfortunately, a typical compost pile requires quite a bit of space and months of time to convert waste into soil. Vermicompost, or the process of using worms such as night crawlers in the composting process, can speed up the process and can even be done indoors. Rinse the bin and the lid with warm tab water to remove any residue. Do not use soap. Drill between 12 and 20 1/4-inch holes in the bottom of your bin. Larger bins need more holes. Drill two 1-inch holes on each side of the bin, near the top. Drill four 1-inch holes in the lid. Turn the bin upside down and place one block of wood at each corner in a horizontal position.
