How Do You Stand In First Position When Fencing?
When walking onto the fencing strip to take a lesson or to assault or bout with another fencer, assume first position until the other fencer is ready to salute. Position the leading foot in the middle of the strip on the line of direction, so that it points directly at the adversary’s leading foot. Place the rear foot at a right angle to the leading foot with heels touching. Stand erect with legs together, head up and forward, and eyes on the adversary. Keep shoulders level and down. Hold the weapon with the guard slightly below the belt line and the blade directed on a diagonal downward and toward the rear, as though it were in a scabbard. Place the unarmed hand on the rear hip, fingers together and in front and thumb rearward (when not holding a mask). When in first position, carry the mask under the rear arm with the mask facing forward and the hand curved under the chin.
