How Do You Spot Fake Sea Glass?
Sea glass is the beautiful outcome of littered glass bottles and time. The bottles are broken down by waves, sand and rocks over time, creating smooth and frosted pieces of sea glass. The glass usually comes from the area in which it’s found, so there are variations depending on where you are in the world. As littering is discouraged, sea glass becomes rarer. Yet, fakes continue to flood the market. Understand that authentic sea glass is glass that’s been tumbled in the ocean, river or bay until it’s smooth and frosted. The fake sea glass is made in a factory, using a rock tumbler or acid wash. Consider the colors to be a big clue if it’s real sea glass. Sea glass comes in very limited colors–browns, amber and green. Oranges, red, black, purple and turquoise are very rare and would never be sold in large quantities. Check the price. The rarer the color, the more expensive it is. If you see great colors at similar prices, it’s a sure sign that the sea glass is artificial. Look at the s
