How Do You Splint A Dogs Broken Toe?
A broken toe can be caused by a door or other heavy object closing or falling on the dog’s paw, or a traumatic event such as a fall or a car accident. There might be only one toe broken, or several. The injury is painful for the dog and probably will result in the dog limping or carrying the foot. Immobilizing the injury by placing a splint on the foot not only facilitates healing of the broken toe, but also makes the dog more comfortable while the injury heals. Place the dog on his side with the injured paw nearest you. Alternatively, allow the dog to stand with a second person holding the injured paw off the ground to facilitate placing the splint. Measure the area from just above the top of the toes to the bottom of the foot, and multiply by two. Cut two pieces of tape to the measured length and place them on the front and back of the injured foot, with one end of the tape placed just above the top of the toes.
