Tucked away in rather remote eastern Washington, the state’s second-largest city has never achieved much of a reputation as a vacation getaway. However, those making the journey might be surprised by an attractive metropolis offering pretty parks and gardens, a bit of culture, and many intriguing fairs and festivals. It’s no exaggeration to call the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture an extraordinary site. The striking modern structure pays particular attention to incredible American Indian creations but boasts artwork and artifacts from all over the globe as well; the neighboring Campbell House mansion, included in your admission cost, is also worth a look. Re-enact “Sideways” and have your own wine-y outing at a few of the worthwhile wineries in the city.
