There are several reasons why you might want to soundproof a floor, such as to isolate foot noise, or to help contain sound in a kids playroom or home theater. This can be accomplished by using a subfloor isolating product. Additionally, the type of flooring used and the ceiling treatment of the room below the hardwood floors will help with sound control. Sweep the subfloor to remove any debris. Check for any exposed nails or screws. Countersink them with a hammer and nail set as needed. Roll out 30-pound felt paper over the entire subfloor. Overlap the seams by three inches. Use a framing stapler for wood subfloors or tape for concrete subfloors to hold the paper in place. This will also act as a vapor barrier for your new hardwood flooring. Place the acoustical panels onto the wood subfloor. (Skip to Step 4 for a concrete subfloor.) Leave a 3/16-inch gap between the 4×8 panels. Stagger the acoustical panels so that no two adjacent panels have end joints that line up with each other.
