The first thing to be able to solve basic math problems is the knowledge of how to count. A young student should learn how to count up to 50, so that they know the numbers they are putting together inside of a math problem when they have to solve them. When doing addition problems a student should take the numbers they are adding and write them out on the paper. In a basic math problem such as 4 + 5, a student should count to four on one hand and count to five on the other hand and then count how many fingers they have total. 4 + 5 = 9.
