Summer months often mean family outings, and for many, this includes taking dogs out for fun in the sun as well. Like people, however, dogs are vulnerable to sun exposure, especially dogs with short coats. It is important to prevent your dog from overexposure to the sun. Dogs can become sunburned, as well as overheated. If you plan on having your dog out in the sun for extended periods, take steps to ensure that it is protected. Apply sunblock to your dog before going outside. Make sure the sunblock does not contain PABA. Use SPF 30 or higher for best results. Avoid getting sunblock in your dog’s eyes or mouth. If your dog is long-haired, it may only need sunblock on its nose. Put a dog sun visor or sun hat on your dog. This will protect your dog’s eyes from UV rays that could harm it. Make sure the hat is secure enough that the dog can play freely, but not too tight that it causes discomfort. Set up a shaded area for the dog.
