How Do You Shepardize A Case?
• Identify the case you want to shepardize. • You may want to cite numerous decisions or points of law in your own case, but you’ll have to verify them one at a time. • You will need the correct citation (reporter, volume and page number) for the case you are researching, as well as the year it was decided. • Choose the appropriate Shepard’s Citator, the one that matches your case’s reporter. • Refer to the section entitled “What Your Library Should Contain” on the front cover of the most recent supplement to your Shepard’s set. • Gather all the bound volumes and soft-cover supplements listed, from the most recent all the way back to the date your case was decided. You will be checking each of these for references to your case. • Begin with the most recent supplement on the list. Find the division that contains your case. • Use the information at the top of the page to locate your citation. The reporter appears at the center. The volume number appears at the top left.
