How Do You Sharpen & Fix An Old Pocketknife?
It may be an heirloom of your grandfather’s, or you may have picked it up at a flea market, but chances are that old pocketknife has plenty of life left in it. If you’re willing to give it a little tender loving care, you can turn that old pocketknife into a treasure to carry in your own pocket. Step 1 Begin by soaking the entire knife in gun oil or other lightweight lubricating oil for several hours.This will help remove dirt and grime and also allow easier opening of the blades. Step 2 Open the blades of the knife and remove any rust by scrubbing with steel wool and oil. Clean the case of the knife using a soft toothbrush and soapy water. Dry the knife completely to prevent any new rust growth. Step 3 Hold each blade to the light and see whether there are any chips in the edge. Use a heavy grit sharpening stone to smooth the edges. Step 4 Sharpen the blade by holding the knife at an approximate 30-degree angle to the stone. Start with a heavy grit and work down to a finer grit stone.
