Fill a bucket with water and dissolve the baking soda. Soak the water stones in the mixture for 20 minutes. Place the 800-grit stone in a vice on a workbench or flat surface. Remove the blade from the hilt. Hold the blade with a thick towel to ensure that you don’t hurt yourself. Hold the sword in one hand, provide balance with the other hand, and keep the sword flat. Pass the blade over the stone in soft uniform even strokes. Use a back and forth motion and keep the blade steady. Inspect the blade often to make sure you are maintaining the surface geometry.
