How Do You Sew With Sheer Fabrics?
Sewing with sheer fabrics requires a little more preparation and care than sewing with sturdier fabrics, but the results are well worth it. Sheer fabrics add sophistication and femininity to your hand-sewn clothing. If you allow yourself a little extra time to properly prepare and manage sheer fabrics, you can sew beautiful and delicate garments to complement your existing wardrobe. Place your sheer fabric on a padded cutting surface in a contrasting color and anchor into place with pushpins before cutting to prevent it from shifting. Slide pins into the seam allowance, and space them closer together than you would with opaque fabrics. Make sure you use larger pins on softer sheer fabrics. Cut out pattern pieces with pinking shears or a rotary cutter to prevent shifting. Adjust your sewing machine to properly handle sheer fabrics; move your needle to the far left of the needle plate to provide additional support for the fabric.
