How Do You Sew An Empire Waist Dress?
• Find a fitted T-Shirt or tank top. Cut the bottom off so that the shirt ends just below your bust line. • Choose one and a half to two yards of fabric for the bottom of your dress. Fold the fabric in half. Measure yourself under your bust, and cut the fabric accordingly, adding an extra inch to allow for seams. • Stitch along the top of the fabric. This can be done either with a sewing machine or by hand (if sewing by hand, just use a regular running stitch) • Gather the fabric. To do so, find the thread that causes the fabric to cinch up when you pull it. Gently pull the thread so that the fabric bunches up. Gather it enough for the fabric so that it fits comfortably around the bottom of your graphic tee. • Pin the fabric onto the T-shirt. You can either pin it under (for a clean edge) or on top (for a more “rugged” or “unfinished look) of the shirt.
