The newsboy style of hat was popular in the early 19th and 20th centuries and has seen resurgence in popularity because of the celebrity status of the hat. A variety of materials can be used in addition to knitting the hat itself. Traditionally, plaids and wool or wool felt were the fabric of choice but today, the choices are vast. Measure the hat size by using the tape measure around the widest part of your head. Add 1 inch for seam allowances. Create the bill by cutting two layers of fabric in a crescent moon shape. This measurement should not exceed one-third of the circumference measurement. With right sides together stitch the bill together along outer curve area. Turn inside out and press. Baste the open edge closed along the curve of the crescent. Make the cap body by cutting four or six triangles. The measurement of the triangles will equal the circumference measurement when allowing for all seam allowances. Stitch together all triangles from the pointed end outward. Backstitch
