How Do You Set Up Turkey Decoys?
Hunting over decoys is a good way to bag the big tom turkey. The decoys are very portable and easy to set up. Most hunters choose to use a set of three decoys that includes one jake and two hens. This fools the larger toms into thinking a jake is about to get a couple of his hens. Pick out the place to set up your decoys. The edge of an open field works well. Place them at least 25 feet from where you will be sitting to hunt. They should be placed between 15 and 30 feet from the tree line. Make sure they are visible from 50 yards in all directions. Take your stake and hammer it a minimum of 5 inches into the ground. The stake needs to be as straight as possible. You need to make sure it is in the ground snug. If you can easily wiggle it, pull it up and move it a couple inches. If you are placing more than one decoy, place the stakes between 3 and 4 feet apart.
