How Do You Set The Timing On A 1982 Oldsmobile 98?
Setting the timing is relativly easy, but hard to explain. Your firewall has the setpoints for the idle speed, and timing. You start out with a warmed up engine, and then you shut if off. You take off the vacuum hose to the distributor, plug it with a screw or something, and then you make sure the idle is set at the idle speed on the firewall. Loosen the bolt holding the distributor, making it easy to turn the distributor. Take a timing light and hook it up to the number one, (drivers side, first plug at front), hook to hot battery post and to negative battery post, and last, to the tachomter plug on the coil. If it is a regular coil, hook to the – minus post on the coil. If it is HEI, which I think it might be, it has a tach post. Now start the car, and aim the light at the marks on engine, near the balancer or damper pully. Be careful not to get wires from timing light in the fan or pulleys. Line up the mark on the harmonic balancer with the 10 degree mark, or whatever the fire wall
