How Do You Set The Ignition Timing On An Engine?

0

Setting the ignition timing on an engine is important because if you don’t have it set right the engine won’t run or will run poorly. Make sure your car is off, then open up the ignition timing chain cover or the over head valve cover depending on the model of your vehicle. Set the timing chain sprocket to the top dead center, and loosen the retainment bolt on your distributor. Set your fly wheel to top dead center, and replace the timing chain cover. Plug in the ignition timing light to a ground (exposed metal bolt head will work) and to the number one spark plug wire. Start your engine using the timing light to indicate your fly wheel timing position. Advance your ignition timing by turning the distributor to the degree position as stated by your vehicle maintenance repair manual. Take the timing light off, tighten everything down, replace all your covers, wires, and anything else that had to be removed or loosened.
