How Do You Set The Correct Chain Length On Iron Horse Mountain Bikes?
Like all bicycles, an Iron Horse mountain bike requires a chain of particular length in order accommodate all gears. A chain that is too short cannot access the full range of gears. One that is too long may offer sluggish response during shifting (changing from one gear to another). Once ideal chain length has been obtained, all future chains can be cut to the same length. Shift the Iron Horse mountain bike chain (using the gear shifters on the handlebar) to the largest rear cog and smallest front chain ring, in effect placing the chain closest to the inside of the bike. Examine the lower portion of chain, between the front chain ring and rear cog. There should be little to no sag in the chain. Also, there should be no contact between the lower portion of chain and the upper derailleur pulley. The derailleur is the mechanism at the rear of the bike that moves the chain from one cog to another. It has two pulleys: an upper and lower. If the chain fails either of these tests, the chain i
