Setting deck posts in concrete is a fairly straightforward process that can be done over the course of a few hours if directions are followed. If you plan on building a deck on your own, the process of setting the deck posts is one of the most important steps. Deck posts need to be set in concrete to adequately and securely hold the weight it will be exposed to on a daily basis. Dig a footer trench approximately 2 feet wide and 4 feet deep using a shovel. Once the footer trench has been dug, place the wood fitting form into the center of the hole, which you can purchase from a hardware store. Place cement mix into your wheelbarrow and pour water in to create the mix. Use your shovel to mix the ingredients until they reach a peanut butter-like consistency. Once the cement mix is complete, use your shovel to transfer the concrete from the wheelbarrow to the wood fitting form.
