How Do You Separate Canna Lily Bulbs?
Planting canna lilies can add a splash of tropical colors to your garden. These large lilies in bold shades of pink, burgundy and lemon are a dramatic addition to any large flowerbed, and cannas have the additional benefit of spreading and producing even more flowers. Left untended, canna lilies could take over your garden. To keep them under control, you must separate the large clump of bulbs into individual bulbs that can be planted elsewhere. Wait until fall, when the flowers have finished blooming and the leaves have yellowed. Canna lily clumps tend to be large, so you’ll need a spade or other type of large garden shovel to dig up the mass of bulbs. Mark a circle with the sharp tip of your shovel all around the clump. With your foot on the top edge of the blade, force it down and under, repeating this all around the clump. Then carefully lift the clump. You will see a mass of bulbs.
