My first experience of adhesive bandage magic was as a new kindergarten playground director. During recess, a little girl scraped her knee. I must have uttered the magic words “bandage” or “band aide” and that was all it took to attract every child on the playground all showing me their ouchies. Many children ages two to five are especially sensitive to the magic of a bandage. To experience this magic yourself certain steps must be taken. When a child cries because of an ouchie, say the magic word “bandage.” Preface the magic word with, “Do you need a …?” Carefully wash the child’s wound with soap and water while uttering the magic word “bandage.” Hearing the magic word may comfort the child and help her endure the cleansing process. Dry around the wound with a clean towel all the while reassuring the child that the bandage will stick better on dry skin.
