How Do You Scout Out Fun, Cheap Halloween Costumes?
New Halloween costumes at big box retailers cost $20 to $30. And they aren’t even interesting or fun. You can shop local thrift shops and rummage sales for fun, cheap costumes for yourself and your kids that people will remember after the candy is gone. Look on Craigslist and in your paper for local church and community rummage sales through November. These are great places to find vintage clothes, hats, gloves, belts, purses and used children’s costumes. Last year, our church rummage sale had fantastic ladies’ hats from the 40s and 50s; fur stoles and capes; elbow-length gloves, and great kids costumes. I found a wig, glasses, and Vote for Pedro shirt that created a costume for a total of $1.50. Visit local thrift stores. Many larger ones have entire costume sections. Most have a vintage clothing corner. Look for single pieces to put together a costume depicting a famous person or movie character.
