yeah they should be as sharp and dark as possible, and when you place it in photoshop use the multiply blending mode, also you may need to increase the contrast to make light tones completely white (scanned paper tends to look yellowish or blue), also if you scan from the start on greyscale it’ll make things faster for the machine, and then when you start to work convert them to rgb another option would be to autotrace them to convert them to vectors, but it tends to slow the computer down and acuracy isn’t always garanteed
