How do you save a custom Performance Monitor (PerfMon) configuration in Windows Server 2008?
If spending time customizing Performance Monitor so that you had every resource plotted and tracked just the way you wanted it was something you ever did in Windows Server 2003, you probably enjoyed being able to just save that configuration through the File->Save option as with any other time-consuming operation. But where has this ability gone with Windows Server 2008 (& R2)?
If you go about reconfiguring your favorite Perfmon settings in Windows Server 2008, you no longer have this ability! There literally is no save option under the file menu and so you may be wondering if it’s even worth bothering redoing all those settings each time after something as regular as a patch maintenance reboot takes place.
Well, it IS possible to save your perfmon configurations in Windows Server 2008, and here’s how you do it:
1) Go to the Start menu and type ‘MMC’ and hit Enter.
2) From the Console window that appears, select File->Add/Remove Snap-in…”
3) Select ‘Performance Monitor’ from the ‘Available Snap-ins’ list on the left, and ‘Add’ it to the ‘Selected Snap-ins’ list on the right. Click ‘OK’.
4) Now expand Performance Monitor here from within the root console window you just added it to, and select Performance Monitor under the Monitoring Tools folder therein.
5) Add and configure all you perfmon setting how you’d like them, and when you’re ready to save it, just go to the File menu and you’ll see that the Save option has returned!
Happy Perfmoning!! =D
