How Do You Sand Square Block Wood Floors?
Parquet floors–those beautiful square block floors made of different pieces of wood–are notoriously hard to sand and refinish. That’s because these elegant-looking floors require you to tackle many different wood grains. Conventional refinishing techniques can damage this kind of floor. That’s why some people claim it’s impossible to sand a parquet floor. However, it doesn’t have to be, if you use the right techniques. Remove all furniture from the room containing your floor. Seal the room off from the rest of the house using plastic sheeting and tape. Cover doorways and all other spaces that lead to other rooms. Open windows for ventilation if possible. Use a small orbital sander to remove the finish from your parquet floors. Sand slowly and carefully. Each section of your floor is made with the wood grain oriented in a different direction. You must sand with the grain for each block of the floor. Begin with a coarse sand paper, such as 20 grit. Sand the whole floor with this paper.
