How Do You Sand Intricate Wood Carvings?
Sanding wood makes it smooth. Finely sanded wood pleases the eye and prepares the wood for paint or stain. The problem with intricately carved wood is that it is difficult to sand in the crevices of the decorative carving. If you sand an intricately carved piece of wood properly can help make it a beautiful piece of art. Sand the larger areas that are not decoratively carved first. Begin with 120-grit sandpaper. Go back over the sanded areas with a finer sandpaper such as 160-grit. Run your finger over the wood. It should feel very smooth if you are done. If not, try an even finer grit of paper. Wrap a piece of sandpaper around the sharpened end of a pencil. Insert the wrapped pencil into the more intricate parts of the carving to sand. Sand throughout any crevices in the same manner as you did the uncarved portions. Wrap some sandpaper around half a toothpick. Insert the wrapped toothpicks into any crevices where the pencil wouldn’t fit. Sand these as best you can. Use the same grits
