The Checkdisk utility (Chkdsk) is a Windows component that allows you to scan your hard disk for problems that cause system errors. It automatically scans your hard disk for bad sectors, lost clusters, directory errors and cross-linked files and attempts to repair them to improve your computer’s performance. Because searching your computer for errors manually can be very difficult, Checkdisk solves problems easier and safely. Click the Windows “Start” menu and click “My Computer.” Right-click the “C:” drive and click “Properties.” Click the “Tools” tab and click the “Check Now” button under “Error-checking.” This displays the “Check disk options.” Select the option you want to use to run the Checkdisk utility.
