The first step in getting your slab pottery started is to roll out the clay much like you did with clay when you were a child. The key to success is slow and consistent movement, as well as cutting off an amount of clay that will roll out to the size you’re envisioning for your finished piece of slab pottery. Cut the clay from the clay block using a cutting wire. Cut enough to make the size of the pot you desire. It’s better to have too much than too little clay. If you cut too little, you will need to cut more and patch the seams together. Note when cutting that you will roll out the clay to a 1/4-inch thickness.
