How Do You Roll Cast In Fly-Fishing?
The roll cast is useful when there isn’t enough room for the traditional back cast. This can be used in tighter areas when you have things like banks or trees behind you. Think of the rotation of your arm in casting like that of a clock. Lay 25 feet of line on the water bringing your rod up to 1 o’clock. Don’t lift the line from the water. The roll cast relies on the contact of your line with the water; it’s a combination of the basic forward cast with a slightly different back cast. Let the line drift toward you until it forms an arc between the rod tip and the water. Stabilize your footing. Set your elbow at a 45-degree angle, shifting your weight back. Drive the rod tip down to the 11 o’clock position after a pause at 1 o’clock. Make a quick and forceful motion with the thumb of your rod hand pointing in front of you, your arm parallel to the water. This motion will pick the line off the water and a loop should unroll in front of you.
