When it was created, Windows 98 had little to no security and the file system was not very strong. Because of this, corruption, deletion or overwriting of system files was a simple process and could happen at any time. The only saving grace was a program called the System File Checker, or SFC. The System File Checker allows a user to scan all of the base system files for corruption or changes, and replace them with stored backups or an original from the Windows 98 CD. Click on “Start” and navigate to “Programs,” “Accessories,” “System Tools” and select “System Information.” Click on “Tools” in the menu toolbar of the System Information application and select “System File Checker.” This will run the SFC application.
