How Do You Restore Stained Glass Windows?
The lead caming in stained glass windows deteriorates over time and eventually needs to be replaced. This do-it-yourself project can be done easily by taking one step at a time, making sure you keep track of where each piece of stained glass goes in the design. Remove the stained-glass window, still in its wooden frame, from the window opening. It may be necessary to remove the vertical molding from the inside of the window frame for the window to come out. Use a small crowbar to pry the molding up and then carefully pull the molding strips out of the window frame. Place a rag under the crowbar to avoid damaging the window’s wood trim. Lay the piece of craft paper over the stained-glass window on your work surface. Use charcoal or dark colored chalk to rub over the entire page, making a transfer of the design of the window to the paper. Set aside to refer to when reconstructing the window.
