How Do You Restore Heavily Oxidized Gelcoat?
Gelcoat is a fiberglass paint that consists of a fiberglass resin that is pigmented with color. This paint is basically resin which requires a catalyst in order to harden. Gelcoat acts as a protective layer over the fiberglass as well as a finishing paint. Many outdoor fiberglass applications such as boats use a gelcoat that has additives to protect from ultra violet rays. Over time, even with the protective additives, oxidation will occur. Oxidized gelcoat is a common problem that can be easily taken care of. Clean the surface of the gelcoat using regular detergent and a sponge. This will clean all the dirt and other buildup that may be on the surface. If there is any mildew on the gelcoat add bleach in with the detergent. Rinse the surface with clean water and dry with a clean towel. Scrub the surface of the gelcoat using a rubbing compound. This will remove any oxidation that is on the surface.
