How Do You Restore And Season A Cast Iron Pan?
You’ve found a rusted cast iron skillet at a garage sale, or your mom’s basement, or garage. Can it be saved? Yes. Cast iron cookware holds even heat and browns fried foods better than most cookware. It’s great on gas stoves, in the oven, electric stove and camp fires. The drawback? Cast iron skillets are heavy! Heat 2-3 tablespoons of oil or fat in the pan. You can use vegetable oil, or other fats. If use shortenings, melt shorting. Remove from heat. Spread 3-4 tablespoons kosher salt in pan. Rub salt into pan. Salt acts like scouring agent and also kills any bacteria. Keep rubbing until crusts of rust or food are removed. It may take two or three times using this method to clean the pan, but it will remove rust and burnt on food. As you rub the oil is forced into the pores of the iron, seasoning the pan.
