If you find out that your child has been a victim of identity theft, it is up to you to reclaim your child’s identity. Follow these steps to report the theft and begin reclaiming your child’s identity. Run a credit report on your child. You are legally entitled to one free credit check per year with each of the three major credit reporting agencies. If your child’s credit report shows unauthorized activity, send a letter to each credit bureau to tell them your child is a minor, listing the fraudulent entries. Also ask them to place an initial fraud alert in your child’s file to prevent an impostor from opening any more accounts in your child’s name. Report the identity theft to the police department.
