How Do You Replace The Gasket On A Kitchen Sink Drain?
The kitchen sink drain has several components, each interlocking with another. The assembly consists of a strainer body, rubber gasket, metal washer and a large lock nut or retainer. The strainer is mounted to the body by a straight tailpiece with a threaded coupling. Removing and replacing a gasket from the strainer is fairly simple with a monkey wrench. Should a garbage disposal be attached, however, the procedure is much more involved. Clear everything out from under the sink. You will see a rubber gasket and a metal washer under the drain as it connects to the drainpipe. There will be a large lock nut holding the body of the drain in place. Unscrew the lock nut. Remove the friction ring and then remove the rubber gasket. Be careful not to inadvertently bend the drainpipe assembly or loosen the elbow joint. Clean out the drain of any debris. Attach the new rubber gasket, then the friction ring and re-tighten the lock nut.
