Occasionally, the coupling on the Whirlpool washing machine will wear out or break due to usage or defective parts. The Whirlpool washers use a three-piece plastic and rubber coupling system. There are a few indicators of the couplers wearing out, including the washer drum not turning and finding black shavings under the washer as a result of the couplings grinding together. You can replace the couplers yourself in about an hour. Unplug the electrical cord of the Whirlpool washing machine from the electrical outlet, and turn the water supply lines off at the valves behind the appliance. Locate the screws on both sides of the washing machine at the bottom of the instrument console, and unfasten with a screwdriver.
