How do you replace the alternator on a Ford Escort?
Remove the top screw and slowly ease back on the tire iron. The alternator acts like a tensioning device for the serpentine belt…this is why you have to apply slight pressure. If you don’t apply pressure you can still back out the top screw, but it will “pop” on you, possible injury may occur. After removing the top screw, remove your bottom screw and work the alternator left and right to lossen it from the engine mount…This part is difficult!! Unplug your electrical connection by lifting on the plastic latch and pulling out slowly. You have a screw to remove which takes a 13mm socket. Use the reverse order to install the new one….remember to apply pressure when putting your top screw back in…good luck. I did this yestersay it took about 20 minutes…i am not a mechanic!
