There is no title document in Canada, there is an ownership document. Finance companies in Canada do not have possession of ownership documents, and they are not listed as owners. They do not retain ownership of the vehicle, they have property liens which expire upon payout of the loans. I presume you are financing with an American institution, and have applied for state title, because a Canadian seller would have given you the ownership document at the same time as the bill of sale. The cost of a new ownership document depends on the province of origin. In Manitoba, for instance, it costs $15.00, and is generated immediately upon request of the registered owner as shown in the registrations system, that would be your seller.
