Drum brakes on a Mazda Protege use a large drum instead of a caliper to slow down the rear wheels. The drum pushes a brake shoe against the drum, causing friction. This friction slows the drum, and consequently, also slows the wheel down. Over time, the drum brakes wear down and need to be replaced. They should be checked every six months for wear but will probably only need to be replaced once a year. Loosen the rear lug nuts with a tire wrench by turning each lug 30 degrees counterclockwise. Raise the rear of the Protege on jack stands. Use the rear jack point located behind the trunk. Place a jack stand under each of the pinch welds in the rear of the vehicle. Lower the car onto the stands. Continue to loosen the lug nuts and then remove the wheel. Remove the spindle bolts holding the drum to the wheel hub. Hit the drum with a hammer to knock it loose.
