The caulk around your tub provides a waterproof seal between the tub and the tile or other wall material, spanning the gap without allowing moisture to seep through. If your caulk is corroding, cracking, discolored or otherwise compromised, it’s important to remove and replace it. It’s a fairly straightforward process, but people often make the mistake of not bleach-cleaning the area to kill mildew, and not filling the tub before caulking (this ensures the tub is sitting at its lowest point, opening the caulk line to its widest position, when the caulk is applied). Run your razor knife along the upper edge of the caulk, with the blade as flat against the wall as possible and all the way through the caulk. Run the blade along the whole length of the caulk.
