Ball joints are the medium used in connecting the movable suspension parts such as the upper and lower control arm. The ball joint allows the pieces to swivel with little or no resistance. Both outer ball joints are connected to the spindle, which holds the tire on. The ball joints allow the control arms to move up and down and the spindle to move left and right at the same time when the steering wheel is turned. Step 1 Raise the front of the truck on one side only. Remove the front wheel. Remove the brake caliper, mounting bracket and rotor. Support the lower control arm by placing the jack stand under the arm close to the ball joint but leave enough room to remove it. Make sure that it is securely supported. Lower the floor jack to raise the control arm a few inches and stop and leave the floor jack in place.
