Whether you have brand new roller skates or vintage ones, you’ll eventually have to replace the bearings. You normally will replace them all at once, but occasionally you’ll need to just replace a single bearing if it’s become warped or damaged. When your skates are making a grinding noise or some other unusual sound, that’s the sign of a bearing that needs replacing. Identify the bearings that need replacing by singling out which wheel is making the noise. Ideally, you should change all the bearings for new ones because then you’ll know the age of all of them. But it is not required. Unscrew the axle nut of the wheel that contains the damaged bearings with your skate tool. Use the round part of your skate tool, which fits over any quad skate axle nut. This will allow you to take the wheel off the axle. If you choose to do this for all your wheels, keep your axle nuts together so you don’t lose them.
