Taking the stem out and replacing it is a fairly straight forward task, which can be completed without having to call a plumber. Step 1 Turn off the water supply to the shower, which may mean you need to turn off the water supply to your entire home. Remove the decorative tip on the shower valve to expose a screw holding on the valve handle. Remove the screw and take off the handle. Step 2 Remove the screws holding on the faceplate of the valve assembly and set the faceplate aside. Find the retainer clip on the valve stem, and remove it using pliers.
