How Do You Replace A Hot Water Tank?
When the hot water tank becomes corroded or leaks, it is time to replace it. When you purchase a new hot water tank, measure the water closet that the tank sits in. Also measure the distances between inlet and outlet pipes on your existing water heater. This will help you to purchase a hot water tank that will fit and cut down on pipe fabrication. Turn the water supply off, and turn off the circuit breaker. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve located at the bottom of the water heater. Place the opposite end of the hose in a bath tub, or route it outside. Turn the drain valve counterclockwise to open it. Flip the pressure relief switch at the top of the water tank to aid in emptying the water. The pressure relief valve has a tube that runs directly under it. Use a screwdriver to remove the access panel to the electrical box of the water heater. It will be located on the water tank. Disconnect the wires by unscrewing the plastic wire caps.
