How Do You Replace A Coil Pack On A 2.5 Pontiac Engine?
Pontiac used the 2.5 liter engine in many different cars starting as early as 1977. The engine, known as the “iron duke” was a stout little four cylinder that became fuel injected and started using what was known as a DIS or Distributor-less Ignition system in 1983. Coil packs replaced the distributor and were fired by the engine’s management computer. If you need to replace one of these coil packs, as they were called, you can get a replacement at many auto parts stores. Mounted on the top of the valve cover, they are easy to reach and change. Remove the negative battery cable from the battery and lay it aside. Anytime you are working on the ignition system, you need to de-energize the system just to be on the safe side. Locate the coil packs on the engine of your car. On the 2.5 liter engine, they are normally mounted on top of the valve cover. Disconnect the electrical connector from the coil pack.
